{"id":1246,"date":"2022-08-03T05:42:51","date_gmt":"2022-08-03T05:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/192.168.23.28\/laquila-and-its-surroundings\/"},"modified":"2022-08-30T08:25:24","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T08:25:24","slug":"laquila-and-its-surroundings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/perdonanza-celestiniana.it\/en\/laquila\/laquila-and-its-surroundings\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u2019Aquila and its Surroundings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nestled in a natural landscape down the slopes of Mount\u00a0<b>Gran Sasso<\/b>\u00a0and surrounded by\u00a0<b>3 National<\/b>\u00a0<b>Natural Parks<\/b> and one\u00a0<b>Regional Natural Park<\/b>, L\u2019Aquila is a medieval city<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>full of surprises.&#13;\nThe official story of its foundation mixes legends and mysteries of Knights Templar, constellations, and extraordinary characters such as Frederick II\u00a0 and Celestine V.&#13;\nThe city was founded by the surrounding fortified villages and to commemorate this event, in 1272, the <b>fontana delle<\/b>\u00a0<b>Novantanove Cannelle (Fountain of 99 Spouts ) <\/b>was built.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#13;\n&#13;\nThoroughfares and narrow streets wind their ways towards\u00a0<b>Piazza Duomo<\/b>, behind which we find the characteristic <b>Palazzo delle<\/b>\u00a0<b>Cancelle<\/b>, four small houses used as bottegas in the Renaissance period and which in 1920 were dismantled and reassembled in a back alley immediately behind the Post Office building. You can appreciate alleys dotted with small shops and traditional restaurants or the medieval austerity preserved by majestic palazzos, the monumental portals and the white sampietrini.\u00a0<b>Costa Masciarelli<\/b> connects<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the external part of the old city still surrounded by the ancient medieval walls, to the market square, Piazza Duomo, which every morning, except on Sundays, hosts the traditional market.&#13;\nPassing through the ancient entrance gate that still has the coat of arms of the city, we reach the <b>Basilica di Collemaggio<\/b>, which, in addition to the several symbolic references about the Templars, boasts three records: the first\u00a0<b>Holy Door<\/b>\u00a0in history, the only Holy Door in the world that is opened every year, and the only Church that has witnessed the coronation of a pope, Celestine V, outside the Vatican.&#13;\nYou can also visit\u00a0<b>Basilica of San Bernardino <\/b>that represents the maximum example of baroque style in L\u2019Aquila, the<b> <\/b>majestic<b> Spanish Fortress<\/b> built by the Spanish conquerors in the 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century for the repression of the rebellious population of L\u2019Aquila,\u00a0or <b>Piazza Palazzo<\/b>, with one of the most ancient clock-towers in Italy.&#13;\n&#13;\nBesides the architectural heritage, the city offers a wide range of activities and excursions in the natural surroundings, between castles and medieval hamlets, caves and natural reserves, walks in the mountains in summer, ski resorts in winter, canoe trips along the cleanest river in Italy, a wolf visitor centre, music festivals, arts and theatre events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nestled in a natural landscape down the slopes of Mount\u00a0Gran Sasso\u00a0and surrounded by\u00a03 National\u00a0Natural Parks and one\u00a0Regional Natural Park, L\u2019Aquila [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":1250,"menu_order":2,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"page-templates\/left-sidebar.php","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-1246","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.6 -
